You’ve probably seen the transformation by now of Historic New Carlisle’s future home located at 112 E. Michigan Street.
What a wonderful surprise to uncover the original cast iron columns, the brick and ornate metal cornice. Not the most fun to cut in and paint the cornice, but well worth it!
There were no windows and doors when we uncovered the facade, so we had to design a new storefront that would mimic the original, but yet last for many, many years.
We began the work just over a year ago having our first volunteer work day doing demo and clean-up on February 3, 2019.
Since then, the building has undergone a complete renovation as we worked to remove layers of carpet and tile to uncover the original hardwood floors. All new HVAC, plumbing and electrical have been installed, two new bathrooms, an office and kitchen created on the first floor and the basement has been totally overhauled in order to store the archival collection.
We are currently working on finishing the kitchen and I am almost moved into my new office which sure beats working out of my dining room! The fun, but stressful part of putting together the displays and exhibits for the museum is starting to happen as well.
We are indebted to our faithful five man crew whom I refer to as the “Fab Five”. They show up every day to work with a new project at hand. The men are Rich Kopkowski, Keith Kauffman, Don Lode, Dan Johnson, and Jeff Gard. We can’t thank them enough for all that they have done to transform the building along with several others who have helped us along the way.
A big thank you to the Indiana Historical Society, The Efroymson Family Fund, and Visit South Bend Mishawaka for their grants to help with our project! We also appreciate our members and supporters who have donated money towards our matching grant for the renovation.
Historic New Carlisle, Inc. is striving to bring the history of New Carlisle and surrounding area such as Hudson Lake, Hamilton, and Olive Township alive through various exhibits and programs.
Our gift shop will feature t-shirts, tote bags, mugs, stickers, magnets, books, postcards and local artwork.
We are excited to begin a new adventure in a downtown location that we hope will attract more foot traffic. We want to offer new programs and exhibits and make it a place for residents and visitors young and old to enjoy!
A grand opening will take place sometime this spring maybe in early May. We can’t wait to open our doors and show off all of the hard work of our volunteers!
