If you have lots of leftover hamburger or hot dog buns after a summer barbecue or outing, here are some ideas where you can use these leftovers.
4 oz cream cheese, softened
1 T. mayo
1⁄2 (1 oz) packet of ranch dressing mix
1⁄2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
6 leftover hot dog or hamburger buns, split
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix very well cream cheese, mayo, dry dressing mix and cheddar cheese and set aside. Separate rolls in half and place cut side up on baking sheet. Spread cheese mix evenly over buns. Bake 10-15 minutes or until topping is golden and edges of rolls and crispy.
Etc. — Leftover buns can also be used for "homemade bun crumbs." Toss leftover buns with little oil or melted butter and place in a skillet over medium heat for a few minutes. You can also add chopped herbs or grated cheese.
Add these tasty crumbs to steamed veggies, salads, baked fish, etc. Also make your own homemade croutons — cut leftover buns into 1-inch cubes, toss with melted butter and seasonings of your choice and bake; once cooled, store in plastic bags.
Try with BLT salad, breading chicken, fish. Another great idea is leftover buns can be used as a soup thickener by adding a few slices of the stale buns to soup which can help to create a thick and creamy texture to the soup. Remove one or two cups of the soup into a bowl and mash with the leftover buns, then add it back into the soup. Be creative!
