Busy Band Buzz: Golden Success

New Prairie Bands celebrated the end of a very successful year with their end of the year concert at the LaPorte Civic Auditorium on May 8. This concert featured performances by the Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble.

The Sound of Cougar Pride filled the historic venue with typical jazz and concert pieces, as well as some classic rock/pop tunes from Stevie Wonder, Chicago, and Toto.

The two concert bands combined to perform selections from “The Phantom of the Opera” as well. One of the jazz selections also highlighted the diverse talent of our students by featuring one of our senior trumpet/guitar players, Levi Britton, as vocalist.

Student diversity was also demonstrated in some feature acts including a performance by our kazoo choir, and seniors Luke Papai with piano and euphonium solos, Drake Kluge with a piano solo, and a French horn solo by Hannah Nelson.

The evening also included honoring our seniors and recognizing those outstanding seniors with awards. The highest band award is the John Philip Sousa Award. This year’s recipient was Luke Papai.

The other awards were as follows: Mental Attitude Award - Tyler Ryder and Colin Syverson, Johannson Award - Lily Carmel and Rachel Humbarger, Louis Armstrong Jazz Award - Brent Newcomb, Marine Corp. Semper Fidelis Award - Hannah Nelson, Spirit of the Band Award - Levi Britton, and Dedication Award - Drake Kluge.

As these seniors were honored with special awards, we honored all seniors for their hard work and dedication. We are proud of what these kids have accomplished, look forward to what they accomplish in the future, and will miss them in our band next year.

This very successful school year began with our marching season. The custom show “Breathe” and our New Prairie Marching Cougars achieved an ISSMA Open Class ‘B’ Gold award and performing at the Semi-State level.

In January, several New Prairie students earned Gold awards at ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble contest. Then in March, the New Prairie Jazz Band earned a Gold Award in group one competition.

Finally in April, both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble earned Gold Awards at ISSMA concert band competition.

In achieving a Gold rating at every level of band competition; marching, solo and ensemble, jazz, and concert band, New Prairie Bands has been awarded the ISSMA All Music Award.

This honor is only earned by the top five percent of high school bands in the state. Our kids continue to proudly represent our school and our community in all that they do.

This has truly been an amazing year for New Prairie Bands, and a fitting way to close out the first fifty years of New Prairie band history. Get ready for what the next 50 years will bring!
