A Periodic Reminder

It’s that time of the year again: New Year’s Resolutions. Sadly, the life expectancy of such things is but a few weeks for many people. Then we return to our comfort zone. What works for me more is periodic reminders.

For the last 30 years, I drive the 200-mile round-trip distance between Chicago and New Carlisle 2-3 times per week. I am aware of the frustration of the roads. I have witnessed horrible accidents through the years. “Road rage” was born, and it’s getting worse. And what is road rage? It is one of the many results of anger.

So here is my “periodic reminder” about anger, that I had memorized years ago when I first came across it: of the Seven Deadly Sins, anger is possibly the most fun. To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past, to roll over your tongue the prospect of bitter confrontation to come, to savor the last toothsome morsel of both the pain you are giving and the pain you are getting back- in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you.

I can’t think of a more powerful message for anger management.
