The Busy Band Buzz: Family

December 22, 2018

At most schools, band is not just a class, only a group or organization, it is more.  A group of kids with such dedication and time commitment cannot help but become more.  Band is a family!

Like any other family, as the year ends and the holidays approach, we cannot help but reflect on the previous year.
The semester is over, and we look forward to the upcoming semester and the competitions and seasons to come, but we have to look at what has been accomplished in the past year.

In January and February, New Prairie Bands had record numbers of events participate in solo and ensemble contest, and advance to the state level competition.

The show choirs and back up bands had yet another phenomenal season.  Our indoor percussion group advanced to the IPA state finals and placed sixth in only their second year of competition.

The summer parade season featured the return of summer marching band uniforms for New Prairie.  These summer uniforms were the only way we made it through a parade season of record heat without any heat related injuries.
And, who could forget our awesome fall marching season ending with a performance in Indianapolis at ISSMA Semi-State competition in only our second year as a class B school.    And, what would be better than a hometown welcome with fire trucks and the streets lined with people for our return.

Just as the band becomes a family, the entire New Prairie community becomes a family to embrace the band family when needed.  With the growing band program, the necessity for new uniforms became imperative.

The task of raising nearly $60,000 is a very daunting and intimidating thought.  But, with a committed family, goals can be achieved.

As we near the time of delivery and final payment for these uniforms, we are steadily reaching our goal. Thanks to all in the community and band families who have helped out through fundraisers such as the mattress sale, snap raise, football concessions, and old uniform sales the goal is within reach.

Though we have several thousand dollars to raise yet, our goal is attainable.  This could not have been accomplished without the support of the community.

We do still have uniforms and other history and memorabilia items available as appreciation for donations.  Please contact Shannon Kelley 574-220-3299 or sksews4u@gmail.com for details.

January 4 will be the New Prairie Pep Band’s alumni night.  We will have items available that evening as well.  Anyone who has been a part of the New Prairie Band Family invited to come join the kids.  No matter when you graduated, from New Prairie, New Carlisle, or Rolling Prairie, all band alumni are invited to come join the pep band.
As close as our band family is, it’s important for today’s kids to understand this family also has history.  We will meet for this game at 5:30pm school time in the high school band room.

New Prairie Bands and New Prairie Band Boosters would like to thank everyone in the community for supporting the band program, encouraging the kids, and for helping us have such a successful year.

We look forward to the upcoming year and all of the good things to come with it.  HAPPY YEAR New Prairie community!
