The Busy Band Buzz: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

As marching season has come to an end for New Prairie Bands, life goes on. On November 17 and 18, six New Prairie students participated in the Indiana Bandmasters Association (IBA) honor band weekend at Plymouth High School.

The students participating were Hanna Nelson (French horn), Brent Newcomb (alto saxophone), Lily Carmel (clarinet), Ella Jasnieski (clarinet), Joel Kelley (trombone), and Melissa Humbarger (trumpet). The honor band weekend involved long rehearsals all day Saturday, concluding with a concert on Sunday evening.

While these students were working hard in Plymouth, others for the band were participating in the fall musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Some of our band students made up the pit orchestra, while others were displaying their versatility by acting and singing in the production.

Our students are not the only hard workers in the band program. Mr. Patrick Teykl participated in the honor band weekend at Plymouth as a sectional tech as well as conducted the pit orchestra at New Prairie for the musical production.

As life goes on for our ever busy band, so it goes for the band boosters. Thanks to our football team and supportive community, the football concession sales brought us closer to our goal to pay for the new marching band uniforms. However, we still have approximately $28,000 to raise in the next six months to pay for them.

As we approach the demolition phase of the New Prairie Music Department remodel, we have been going through the accumulation of items amassed over the fifty years of New Prairie band history.

In an effort to reach our goal for the new uniforms, we have some memorabilia items to offer as a thank you for your donation. We have the current marching band uniforms, plumes and drop sashes from the ’87-’03 uniforms, and plumes from the original ’69-’87 uniforms to offer to the community.

We also have our tree and vinyl prints from this year’s show “Breathe” as well as the prints from last year’s “Beneath the Surface” and the 2016 show “Letters Home” available.

For more information on these items and suggested donation levels, please contact New Prairie Band Boosters President Shannon Kelley at 574-220-3299 or sksews4u@gmail.com.

Or, you can see us at the Holiday Band Concert December 12 at six school time in the high school auditorium. This will be the last holiday concert in the old auditorium. We look forward to seeing you there.
