Golf back on course at Birch Tree

You can finally hit the links again in New Carlisle. At the end of June, the Birch Tree Golf Course at the Billy Goat 9 & Dine re-opened for the first time in over eight years.

George Petersen and Sharon Cooper are excited to host golfers on the course again, currently offering a 20% discount as an opening special.

Sharon credits George and son, Josh Cooper (both pictured on the front page) for leading the effort to restore the course. She is also appreciative for the backing from their customers, staff, and families.

“Without their support and encouragement, this could have never happened,” she said.

The course opening was bittersweet for the family, as George’s father passed away the Friday before. He and Sharon’s parents were among the most anxious and excited for the re-opening.

It took years of hard work to get the course back up and running again with greens, tee boxes, and automatic irrigation system.

The rainfall in May and June added to the timeline, leading to three washouts and making planting a challenge. “Our goal was to give the community their course back,” said Sharon. “As we grow, we will be able to offer our guests more amenities and continually improved conditions.”

One noticeable difference is the addition of two ponds to Hole #2. Bent grass tee boxes, defined cart paths, more trees and landscaping are all among the constant improvements on the way. While the work will continue to progress, it’s a fun course for everyone.

“We never want New Carlisle to end up a ghost town,” Sharon said. “Successful businesses will benefit each other and the town.”

The Billy Goat 9 & Dine is open every day. Restaurant hours are 11am to 10pm Sunday through Thursday, and 11am to 11pm on Friday and Saturday, with the bar open until 2:30am.

Golf is open at 8am on weekdays and 7:30am on weekends, but they are willing to accommodate earlier tee times. It is just $9 to play a round, with an additional $7 for a cart.
