The New Prairie Marching Cougars began their summer parade season on June 26 with the Bremen Firefighters Festival. This is always a favorite for the kids, first of all because it is an evening parade which means it is usually cooler. Mostly though, the kids look forward to the carnival afterward, and best of all, carnival food! The parade season continued June 30 in Michigan City, July 3 in Walkerton for another evening parade, and of course July 4 for the killer of all parades in La Porte.
I’m not sure how long it has been, if ever, that we have had such an abnormally hot and humid parade season. Every parade so far this summer was oppressively hot, with heavy humid air making it hard to breathe, even the evening parades, making it the perfect year to switch our Parade uniforms to Dri-fit polos and shorts.
The Marching Cougars all had an incredible attitude, and despite the heat performed well in each parade, proudly representing our New Prairie community. The kids could not have done this, however, without the positive attitude and strong leadership of their directors: Mr. Patrick Teykl, Mr. Daniel Weinberg, marching instructor Tre’von James, and color guard coaches Emily Rowe and Hayley Shankland.
Also, we could not have gotten roughly one hundred kids through two and half miles of extreme heat without our awesome Band Booster parent volunteers. We send out a huge thank you to all of our band parents that helped out at all of these parades with water to keep our kids hydrated. Come out and cheer on your New Prairie Marching Cougars at the New Carlisle Hometown Days Parade!
Please look for the next edition of The Gazette where we will have details on our Band Boosters Booth and dunk tank. We will have a dunk tank schedule published so that you can plan your weekend around who you would like to see wet. All proceeds from this will go towards the purchase of new marching band uniforms.
We have also partnered with Scrappy Iron and Metal in Rolling Prairie. If you wish to donate to the band, just tell them it’s for New Prairie Bands when you take you scrap in, and they will put that money in an account for the band uniforms. Thank you to Scrappy Iron and Metal for helping us out. With support and cooperation from the community we will reach our goal and have the new uniforms for the 2019 marching season!
