The Busy Band Buzz: Marching Season

As most high school students are anxiously waiting for school to be out for the summer, band students are waiting anxiously like a child on Christmas Eve for marching band kick-off.

The New Prairie Marching Cougars 2018-19 marching kick-off was May 17 in the high school auditorium. This event takes place every year to announce the details of the upcoming marching season. The most anticipated is the announcement of section leaders, band officers, and drum majors.

Other exciting news revealed is the summer parade songs and the highly anticipated theme for the competitive show for the upcoming season. New rookie marchers are introduced to the program, both freshmen and eighth grade marchers. This year’s parade selections include “Our National March” (The Stars and Stripes Forever) by John Philip Sousa, “Under Pressure” by Queen, “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, and of course our school song “The Victors.”

The drum majors for the year will be Mia Britton, Dylan Liggett, and Brent Newcomb.

The theme for the competitive show this year is “Breathe.” The show is inspired by trees, nature, life, and breath, exploring our existence, interaction, and struggles as humans co-existing with nature.

With normal high school students looking forward to a summer of relaxing, perhaps vacations, maybe even jobs, band students eagerly begin a summer of long practices and a lot of work. A week or so off of school and band resumes with leadership retreats, rookie practices, parade practices, uniform fittings, and that is just in June. The month of June finishes up and July begins with parades. With a couple weeks off after the Fourth of July, the summer break is short.

The last week in July and first week in August are band camp: long days on the blacktop learning fundamentals, music, and drill for the competitive show. By the time school starts, our band kids have the best tans in the whole school.

Look for more details of our summer in upcoming issues. Please get excited with our kids and come out to some summer events to support our Marching Cougars!
