Rainfield Farm is the recipient of the 2018 Chef Rick Bayless Frontera Foundation Grant. They were recognized for their sustainability projects and conservation. The $4000 grant will be used to build a swale for flood prevention, installation of new sprinklers and fortification of caterpillar tunnels.
“We’re honored to be Indiana’s only small farm to receive the grant this year.” said Shane Hansen, Rainfield Farm’s owner. “Being a newer small farm it’s hard to find additional funds needed to make improvements such as these. Its great to be recognized for our conservation and efficiency efforts by the Foundation.”
The Frontera Farmer Foundation was established in 2003 to attract support for small Midwestern farms. Rick and Deann Bayless, founders of Frontera Grill and Topolobampo, along with the restaurants’ staff, created the Foundation out of their concern for struggling farmers and the importance of local produce to the vitality of Chicago’s culinary culture.
Small local farms promote biodiversity by planting a wide range of produce, are more likely to operate using organic practices, and add immeasurably to the fabric of their communities. By their artisanal approach to agriculture, these farmers insure the highest quality of food.
Their farm is also the recipient of the USDA NRCS (EQIP) grant, $10,500, for a high tunnel and pollinator fields. The grant is available to assist farmers financially for conservation practices for cleaner water and air, healthier soil and better wildlife habitat, all while improving agricultural operations.
Rainfield Farm is an organic farm in New Carlisle, IN. They produce over 50 varieties of vegetables for their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) members and wholesale accounts.
You can find their products at Al’s (Michigan City, LaPorte, and Karwick), Barney’s (New Buffalo), various NWI health food stores and local juice & smoothie companies. They also participate in Michigan City Schools’ Farm to School program.
