The Busy Band Buzz: State Finals!

On March 17, the New Prairie Indoor Percussion Ensemble traveled to Greenfield Central High School for the Indiana Percussion Association (IPA) Scholastic B prelims. After a season of hard work and many hours of practice, our students delivered a performance receiving their highest score yet from the judges. Along with an impressive score, many good comments from the judges and an eighth place ranking, our New Prairie kids qualified for the IPA Scholastic B State Finals.

Another week of practice, students worked hard polishing their routine for the finals. Only in their second season of IPA competition, qualifying for the finals was very exciting.

On March 24, after a morning practice, the trailer was loaded one last time for the season and the caravan to Indianapolis began. This week’s destination for our finals was Avon High School. All was going well until just outside Indianapolis when the snow began. After more than three hours on the road, while avoiding multiple accidents on a very slippery I-465, Mr. Weinberg received notice that the competition had been cancelled for the day. A bus load of anxious band kids, and truck and trailer pulled off the interstate to determine our next course of action.

It was determined to be unsafe to continue, in either direction, so twenty-one students and eight adults were stranded in Indy. A snowball fight, some cards, some games, and some pizza got everyone through until the roads were safe to return home on Sunday morning (no performance, no finals, much disappointment). However, IPA has rescheduled our finals for April 7. Our dedicated kids volunteered to give up some of their spring break for a couple rehearsals and to travel to South Vigo High School in Terre Haute for IPA Scholastic B State Finals. Good luck New Prairie Indoor Percussion, you’ve had an awesome season and will finish strong !
