Local Athlete earns 2017 USSSA All-American Baseball selection
Reed Robinson, 9, of New Carlisle, IN was selected for the 2017 USSSA All American Baseball (Great Lakes) team. This is Reed’s first year to be chosen as an All American.
Reed is a fourth grader at Olive Elementary School in New Carlisle and currently plays on the New Prairie Ironmen (9U) travel baseball team. Reed is a utility player who plays pitcher, catcher, and first base positions for the Ironmen.
At his tryout, Reed focused on pitching and catching (as you had to select two spots to be evaluated on). Reed received the top scores at the entire showcase for the hitting portion scoring a six on a 20/80 scale. Robinson, a switch hitter, was evaluated on speed, performance factors at the two selected positions, and hitting.
USSSA All American baseball teams are chosen from the top players across the nation in their respective age classes. USSSA breaks up teams into eight regions (Far West, Northwest, Central, Midwest, Northeast, Atlantic, Great Lakes, and Southeast).
Each region holds multiple showcase events to select the top players in each region for their team. Robinson attended a showcase in the Great Lakes region, which had three total showcase events (Canton, MI, Chicago, IL, and Cincinatti, OH). Robinson attended the showcase in Canton, MI on May 26, 2017.
All selectees were announced live on ESPN 3 on June 25, 2017. Each regional team will travel to Orlando, FL from August 6-12th to the ESPN Wide World of Sports to compete in the All American Games where one team will walk away as the National Champion. Robinson was the only athlete from this area selected to participate.
Robinson is the son of Michael and Shannon Robinson of New Carlisle.
