It’s St. Joseph County Fair time! This year, the St. Joseph County 4-H Boosters will be selling cookbooks ($20.00), showing all the Blue Ribbons winners in various categories at the 4-H fair.
The proceeds will be used to purchase a new 4-H display case in the Exhibit Hall of the fair. Our very own Leanne Doms’ recipe was showcased as she received a Blue Ribbon in 1989 at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair for her Cherry Nut Bread.
Cherry Nut Bread 2 ½ cups flour ½ sugar ½ c. brown sugar 3 ½ tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 3 T. vegetable oil 1 ¼ cup milk 1 egg ½ tsp vanilla 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 jar (10 ounces) maraschino cherries (drained and chopped)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease bottom only of loaf pan (9 x 5 x 3). Mix all ingredients, except cherries. Beat 30 seconds. Stir in cherries. Pour into prepared pan. Bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean (65 -70 minutes). Cool slightly, remove from pan. Cool completely before slicing.
Etc. – Leanne also won a Blue Ribbon for her Butter Cake in 1990 at the 4-H Fair, and her Butter Cake got a State Fair Entry at the Indianapolis State Fair. The cookbook entitled, “Blue Ribbons Recipes 1976 through 2016: St. Joseph County 4-H” will be on sale at the fair which will be held June 30- July 7. Thank you, Leanne!
