New Prairie Bands Active and Growing


Many of you in the community are aware of the commitment and talent exhibited by our young people in the band program at New Prairie.

However, many people in the community are not aware of the performances and competitions which these students have been participating, and representing our community and school with pride.

Our marching band performs at the halftime of our home football games, which many of you have seen. And, they can also be seen in various parades throughout the summer, including: New Carlisle Memorial Day, Rolling Prairie Memorial Day, Bremen Firefighters Festival, Michigan City 4th of July, Walkerton 4th of July, LaPorte 4th of July, and New Carlisle Hometown Days.

Our band also had the honor of performing the National Anthem at the DCI Open Class Finals at Ames Field in Michigan City in August.

These students dedicate a good part of their summer break to represent both our school and community at these public events.

Once school begins, they enter their competitive marching season. Last fall our kids performed their marching show “Letters To Home”, a show honoring our WWII veterans and the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Our band practiced, sweat, cried, and perfected this show, performing at several competitions including: Goshen Invitational, Concord Invitational, Penn Invitational, Elkhart Memorial Invitational, and ISSMA Regionals and Lafayette Jefferson High School.

The band also prepares the usual concerts, holiday performances, concert band contest, jazz band contest, solo and ensemble contest, etc. We also have a group that provides the backup band for the show choirs, which received best band distinction February 18th at their first competition of the season.

New for 2017, we also have an indoor percussion ensemble competing this winter as well. Music education is important in developing creativity, problem solving, and cognitive skills in our students. As a community we are fortunate to have a school system which supports the arts, and have talented youth to represent us so well. Because of the excitement created by these students, the enthusiasm of our directors, and support from the administration, the instrumental music program at New Prairie is growing in leaps and bounds.

For the 2016-17 school year, we have a larger enrollment in sixth grade band than we do in high school band. This is due to the efforts of our veteran band members, our directors Mr. Teykl and Mr. Weinberg, our administrators Dr. White, Mrs. Sass, Mrs. Scott, the school board, and support from the community. A huge thank you to the community for supporting the tax referendum last spring!

Because of the tax payers in our community, our performing arts programs will have a new auditorium in which to perform, and will be large enough for all in the community to come see these performances. Also, new band and choir rooms will be created. Currently, the band room is too small for the entire band to rehearse together.

Because of the excitement and growth in our band program, we will need to purchase new band uniforms in the next few years.

This is not due to wear or abuse of the current uniforms, but because we simply will not have enough. The school will pay for half of the purchase price of the new band uniforms, but matching funds must be raised privately. In preparation for this, the New Prairie Band Boosters will be holding several fund raising events over the next couple of years. Boosters needs to raise approximately $65,000 to cover the privately raised half of the total cost. Our current upcoming events include a Trivia Night (for adults 21 and older) at Monroe’s Crossing on Saturday, March 25.

On Saturday, April 22, the historic Blue Lantern Ballroom at Monroe’s Crossing will once again come to life with a Jazz Dinner/Dance. We hope you will join us for an evening of live music by New Prairie Jazz Bands and Down By The Dock and a roast beef/chicken dinner, tickets are $30 each.

Trivia Night Information Our first event to raise funds for the purchase of new band uniforms is fast approaching! The New Prairie Band boosters will be hosting a trivia night (for adults 21 and over) on March 25th at Monroe’s Crossing. The evening will feature our very own band director, Patrick Teykl, as Master of Ceremonies.

The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. school time. Feel free to bring your own food to snack on and plenty of cash for our spectacular silent auction items and raffle.
