Children's Programs at NCPL
I love my job as the children’s coordinator at the New Carlisle-Olive Township Public Library.
As a former teacher, I believe one of the most important gifts we can give our children is a love for reading, learning, music, and exploring.
My goal as the children’s coordinator is to provide those kinds of opportunities for children of all ages and their families to experience that at NCPL.
On the second Monday of each month, we have FUNDAY MONDAY at the library.
The program meets from 3-4 p.m. ET (town time) and is for children kindergarten through fifth grade. We craft, build, play games, and explore together.
In February we will be making upcycled art (art made from recycling materials). In March we will be playing Games! Games! Games! In April we will be crafting and in May we will be having an “Almost Summer” Celebration. A snack is always provided!
Construction Monday meets the first Monday of each month from 6-7 p.m. ET (town time). Children, grades kindergarten through fifth, meet together to build and create using LEGO bricks, blocks, straws, etc.
On the second and fourth Tuesday of each month TOTs (Teens of Tomorrow) meets from 3:45-4:45 p.m. ET (town time). This program is for fourth, fifth and sixth graders.
We have a snack, play games, create and use technology together. This is a new program at the library, and it is quickly growing in popularity.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 14. There will be a Valentine’s snack, and we will play Minute to Win It games, have a tic-tac-toe tournament and make friendship bracelets.
On Wednesday and Thursday morning, we have story-time at 10am ET (town time). Of course we read stories, but we also sing, dance and create together.
On the third Friday of each month, also at 10 a.m. ET (town time), we have Preschool Playdate in the toy area. This is an informal time for families to come to the library to play and learn together.
Coffee is provided (for the grown-ups). Both of these programs are designed for children four and under. On Wednesday afternoons, we have a program called Wednesdays @ NCPL. This program is for children kindergarten through fifth grade from 3-4 p.m. ET(town time).
The theme changes monthly and registration is required for each new theme.
You can register at the library, by phone (574-654-3046) or through the library’s website (www.ncpl.com).
In February we are having MAGIC CLUB, March will be JEWELRY CLUB and April/MAY will be GARDENING CLUB. A snack is provided.
Playdate with Baby is held on the first and third Fridays of the month at 10 pm ET (town time). This program is for children under 24 months.
Your baby does not need to be able to “sit still” for this program. We sing, rhyme, move and play to encourage early literacy.
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is another fun way that the library is promoting early literacy. Families keep track of the books they’ve read and are recognized for each 100 books read.
The children’s department at NCPL is a great place to spend a few hours. Play a game, visit with a friend, work on your homework, visit with Charlotte (the tarantula), work on a puzzle, or read a book!
Just a friendly reminder, children under eight years old MUST be accompanied in the library by an adult (13 or older) and children between the ages of 8-12 can spend two hours daily at the library without an adult.
