Three Wrestlers Advance to Semi-State

Across the state, nearly 3,500 wrestlers enter into the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) State Tournament when the Sectional round begins.


Currently only 896 remain after the Regional round.


Three of those competitors are New Prairie Cougars.


Brayden Ruiz (113), Clayton King (132) and Leighton Rodriguez (285) will compete in this weekend's Semi-State competition at East Chicago.


The top four wrestlers in each weight class will move on to the State Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on February 17 and 18.


To qualify for Semi-State, Ruiz and King placed third in their respective weight classes at the Crown Point Regional last weekend.  Rodriguez finished fourth.

 

REGIONAL QUALIFIERS
A total of 12 New Prairie wrestlers competed at Crown Point for the regional, advancing out of the LaPorte Sectional held on January 28.


Ruiz was the 113-pound Sectional Champion, defeating Kade Wagner of Knox in the championship.
Second place sectional finishers for the Cougars were: Jon Sipes (120), Mike Adams (126), Austin Lesniak (152), and Rodriguez (285).


Third place finishers were: Miguel Avila (106), King (132), Jake Pinter (138), Christopher Mays (160), Grant Johnson (170), Luke Lenig (182) and Scott Breeding (220).


For the Sectional, New Prairie placed second as team, only behind Chesterton.
