Stage set for Girls Basketball State Tournament
From Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the opening week’s pairings were made on Sunday, January 15 for the 42nd Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament presented by the Indiana Fever and Indiana Pacers. Sectional games are scheduled to begin Tuesday, January 31, and run through Saturday, February 4, with the regional round slated for February 11 and semi‐states on February 18.
The four state championship games that make up the state finals will be played at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 25.
North Harrison, the top‐ranked team in Class 3A and last year’s state runner‐up, will take on Silver Creek in the opening game of Sectional 30 at Corydon Central.
Among last year’s state champions, Class 3A third‐ranked Heritage Christian, which has won three consecutive state championships and 20 consecutive tournament games will take on Delta in Sectional 24 at Tipton.
Sectional 18 New Prairie (2-18) will be competing in Sectional 18 at Rensselaer Central. The six-team sectional features only one team with a winning record.
The Cougars will face the host Bombers (13-7) in the first round on Tuesday, January 31.
The winner will advance to face Twin Lakes (7-14) in the semi-finals on Friday, February 3.
Andrean (10-11) is the defending sectional champion. The 59ers will face Wheeler (10-11) in Tuesday's other first round match-up.
Hanover Central (9-12) received the other bye and will await the winner of the Andrean/Wheeler contest. The opening round schedule has been adjusted from the original IHSAA draw, due to the long distance for New Prairie to travel on a school night.
The Cougars will play in the first game of the night, which will tip off at 6:00 p.m. Central Time.
The semifinals and championship round schedule and format for Friday and Saturday remains unchanged from the original draw.
The winner of Sectional 18 will advance to a four-team Regional, also hosted by Rensselaer Central. The Sectional 18 champion will face the champion of Sectional 19 at John Glenn, which features five Northern Indiana Conference teams.
Champions of both the Benton Central and Calument sectionals will also play at the Rensselaer Regional.
About the Draw To conduct the random drawing for the girls basketball state tournament, the IHSAA places ping‐pong balls representing each school in a given sectional into a lottery‐style air mix machine.
A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order.
For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in game one with the second ball representing the home team in game one.
The third ball to come out is the visitor in game two and the fourth ball the home team in game two. That same method is followed through all 64 sectionals and 16 regionals.
There are 101 teams competing at the Class 3A level this year, most of any class.
Ticket Information Tickets for each session are $6. A full sectional pass, which includes all three sessions can be purchased for $10.
