Wrestlers from 49 schools participated in the inaugural Indiana High School Girls Wrestling (IHSGW) State Finals on Friday, January 20 at Hamilton Heights High School in Arcadia, Ind.
New Prairie was well-represented  with three  wrestlers, all freshmen, placing in the top three of their weight classes.
Alyssa Kuta finished second in the 285-weight class.  Kuta pinned Makayla Ringer from Penn to advance to the finals, but was defeated by North Putnam's Abby Kimes.
Both Tanisha Jimenez (145) and Makayla Scarborough (132) finished in third place.
Jimenez defeated Warren Central's Autumn Terhune in her third place match, while Scarborough pinned Kaylee Clendenen from Pendleton Heights.
To qualify for the State Finals, the wrestlers advanced out of a regional competition held at Rochester.
At the Northern Regional, Kuta placed first, Scarborough second, and Jimenez third in their respective weight classes.
Penn High School won the overall team state competition.
The IHSGW State Finals is the first event of its kind, with the intent of giving female wrestlers more opportunities in the traditionally male-dominated sport. The tournament received the approval of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, however it is not yet an officially sanctioned IHSAA event.
