New Prairie Welcomes New SRO

On September 28th La Porte County Sheriff John Boyd appointed Deputy Corey Chavez to fill the position of School Resource Officer for the New Prairie United School Corporation.

The school corporation had entered into an agreement with the sheriff’s office late in the 2015-2016 school year and then Deputy Aaron Stobaugh was selected for the position.

Over the summer Deputy Stobaugh left the area for other employment.

A second selection process began with the end result being Deputy Chavez was selected. Deputy Chavez started with the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office in 2006 beginning as a jail deputy. Deputy Chavez took a leave of absence after he joined the US Army and served two tours of duty in the Middle East.

In 2011 he was appointed to the position of patrol deputy.

Deputy Chavez and his wife Amanda have five children and reside in La Porte.

“We are very pleased to have this collaboration with the New Prairie schools and believe that Deputy Chavez will be a great representative of our department. Corey is the fourth deputy we have assigned to the schools in La Porte County. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office feels very strongly about providing a safe environment for our students. The SRO program goes a long way toward achieving that goal” stated Sheriff Boyd.

He continued “we appreciate the collaborative effort between Superintendent White, the members of the school board and our office as we worked out the agreement and the selection.”

Deputy Chavez, who began working a part-time schedule in the schools at the start of the school year, has started full time and is based at the New Prairie High School
