Sidewalk Saturday returns to Downtown New Carlisle
Sidewalk Saturday returns to historic downtown New Carlisle on Saturday, July 30 from 9:00am to 5:00pm EDT… rain or shine.
The one-day event is an opportunity to visit local shops, take in sidewalk sales, and linger at the town’s outdoor cafes.
This year local artisans will setup their displays along Michigan Street in downtown New Carlisle and offer a variety of one-of-a-kind creations including re-purposed furniture, crocheted work, wreaths, jewelry, silk flowers, stoneware pottery and a few surprises.
The local community organization, Discover New Carlisle, reintroduced the Sidewalk Saturday event in 2013 after a hiatus of more than a decade.
Given that Discover New Carlisle’s mission is to encourage and promote local activities and business opportunities, Sidewalk Saturday is the perfect weekend experience for established shops to reintroduce themselves and new vendors to introduce their work to the public.
One “success” story that grew out of the first Sidewalk Saturday event is The Potter’s Wife located at 111 E. Michigan Street in New Carlisle.
In 2013, Steven Skinner, artist, potter, and owner of BlackTree Studio Pottery and his wife, Louise Belmont-Skinner contacted Kathy Aurenz, owner of Yarn and More, and director of Discover New Carlisle to inquire how to participate in the events going on at the Town Park during Hometown Days.
Kathy informed the Skinners that Discover New Carlisle was offering vendor spaces in downtown New Carlisle, and suggested that they set up their pottery in front of an empty storefront previously used by the town’s podiatrist.
Turns out that Keith and Marcy Kauffman owned the empty storefront. Marcy had recently opened her store, Feeney’s Hometown Goods, which features local artisans.
By the time that summer weekend event ended, BlackTree Studio had rented the empty storefront and joined the Discover New Carlisle organization.
Thanks to Discover New Carlisle, Sidewalk Saturday, and Marcy Kauffman, The Potter’s Wife opened its doors in October 2013.
Why not take a stroll down New Carlisle’s Michigan Street during Sidewalk Saturday on July 30 from 9:00am to 5:00pm EDT? Perhaps you’ll discover the next new local business.
