Library hosts exhibit in celebration of Bicentennial

Make plans to visit the New Carlisle Public Library as it plays host to an exhibit titled “Looking at St. Joseph County: A Traveling Photography Exhibit by Louis Sabo.

The exhibit is presented by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County, Lou Sabo, and the St. Joseph County Commissioners in celebration of Indiana’s 2016 Bicentennial year.

The traveling exhibit is one of many endorsed legacy projects in the county that celebrates this special year.

The exhibit features 350 traditional black and white photographs displayed in three portfolios and eight frames.

Through pictures, you can experience Mr. Sabo’s travels through the county over the decades. His photographs capture small towns and farms, the evolution of South Bend, and special places in St. Joseph County.

The exhibit will be at the library until June 17. Sabo will give a lecture about his photographs on July 23rd at the St. Joseph County Public Library Main Branch in the Colfax Auditorium from noon until 2 pm EST. The program is free and open to the public.

The exhibit was made possible, in part, with support from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County’s ArtsEverywhere initiative, Visit South Bend/Mishawaka, the University of Notre Dame, and St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce.

Indiana’s Bicentennial is being celebrated in many different ways throughout the county and state. Two recent activities include the launch of fifteen new geocache sites around St. Joseph County and a scenic byways passport program that was created by the Michigan Road Association.

Passports are available at the Old Republic and include maps of the seven state historic byways. You can get your passport stamped at designated locations throughout the state.

A torch relay will take place through St. Joseph County on October 8th and a Bicentennial Birthday Celebration will take place that day at Bendix Woods County Park. The relay will end at Bendix Woods where the torch will be handed off to LaPorte County.

For more information about these and other activities you can check out the Facebook page at facebook.com/SJCINbicentennial or the website at www.in.gov/ibc/.
