Robert J. Cuff, 94, of New Carlisle, Indiana, formerly of Rolling Prairie, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Hamilton Grove in New Carlisle, IN.
Robert was born November 29, 1921 to Michael and Marie (Quigley) Cuff, in LaPorte, IN. Following graduation from LaPorte High School, he left for Nebraska to find work during the Great Depression. There, he eventually enlisted to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He later advanced into 1st Lieutenant of the 100th Bomb Squadron, 42nd Bomb Group (Medium) piloting a B-25 Mitchell.
On October 11, 1943 Robert married Rosa Mae Boettcher in Sacramento, California. Rosa preceded him in death on July 3, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susan Hopkins; a brother, Richard Cuff; sisters, Theresa Pieschala, Ethel Mae Koeppen, Katherine Marquart, and Mary Jane Cuff.
After the war, he began working at Bastian Morley where he became Vice President. After it’s closing, Robert briefly worked at Mordien until he moved on to Davis Products until retirement at 65.
Robert, or Bud to his friends and family, was the type of man that would take the long way home. Being outdoors was akin to being with God. Him and Rose were as much on the road traveling in their camper to places like Texas, Yellowstone, and the Black Hills, as they were at home, sitting on the porch, sharing a beer, and a laugh, or two, with their family.
He was never adverse to hard work. Bud loved gardening, hunting and just being outdoors on adventures. He instilled this on not only his own children, but his grandchildren, who he loved being with, as much as he loved loading them up and sending them home. He had a great love for quirky and goofy knick knacks, pictures and trinkets. And, his biggest love was Rose, who he is now finally with after 5 years.
Bud appreciated the harder lessons in life, they built character. He was humble enough to admit when he needed help, and said to always cherish your family. Family will always be there when you need them.
Robert leaves behind two daughters, Kathleen (Thomas) Haas of Michigan City, IN and Janis (Alan) Giles of Marengo, IL; a son, Ronald (Marjorie) Cuff of Hanna, IN; a son-in-law Randall Hopkins of Detroit, MI; 17 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Patricia Schroeder of La Porte, IN.
A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016 at St. John Kanty Catholic Church in Rolling Prairie, IN. Burial will follow in Rolling Prairie Cemetery with Military honors.
