New Prairie show choirs return to state

New Prairie’s show choirs, Innovation (mixed) and Sing Sensation (all women) returned to the state finals for a third year in a row.

State finals for show choirs are divided into two groups, small and large. Small schools are those under 1600 students. We competed in the small school division, and we had some tough competition.

Our students gave their all on the stage to come away with a fourth place finish for Sing Sensation and a tenth place finish for Innovation.

Show Choir is considered a co-curricular class which means the students not only have class time during the school day but they practice after school three or four days a week!

The choirs are directed by Mr. Truster and choreographed by Joe Sato. Mr. Teykl, the band director at NP, leads a student back-up band that won many “best back-band” awards this year.

Sing Sensation’s show this year was a hot/cold theme with songs like Frozen, The Heat is On, Fire and Rain and Burnin Up/Hot Stuff. Innovation’s show included the songs: Something to Believe In, Wonderwall, Judy Blue Eyes, Blue Suede Shoes and Boogie Wonderland.

Many thanks to the parents and grandparents that spent hours working on the sets and the costumes. Thank you also to Mr. Dettinger and his staff for their support this year.

You can help support our music department by coming out for a special fundraiser on Saturday, April 16th. We will be featuring a concert by Alvie “Elvis” and the Sweet Sensations. They are a group made up of former New Prairie choir members, and the choir students will perform a few numbers with them.

Tickets are available from choir members as well as the New Prairie High School office. The tickets are $10 in advanced and $15 at the door with all proceeds going to the choral department.

You can also see all of our New Prairie High School choirs in action on Thursday, May 12 and Friday, May 13 for our spring show in the high school auditorium.
